about

Double Ewes is an electronic indie folk band founded in 2010 by singer-songwriter Whilden Hughes VI in Janesville, Wisconsin. The band also includes members Jeremy Nealis and Max Jewer. Hughes started recording ideas on cassettes while living in a house near to his family farm on the outskirts of Janesville. With the addition of Nealis and Jewer the trio were able to use pieces of the early tape recordings to compose songs for the debut self-titled release 'Double Ewes'. The songs are backed by an electronic drum kit and sampling machine which when combined with other instruments create a dense texture comprised of many layers.

"The trio (comprised of Jeremy Nealis, Whilden Hughes, and Max Jewer) makes music backed by an electronic drum kit, and they write bits and pieces of new songs out of old, previously recorded tapes. One of the band’s musical feet seems to be out the door, the other lingering behind a bit longer." - A. Brandt, Jonk Music.

“After a lot of hard work in the studio, Hughes and bandmates Jeremy Nealis and Max Jewer have created a contemporary folk record far from the confines of the offensively inoffensive preciousness of indie-folk or the hyper-indulgent reaches of the mutated electro-folk of Animal Collective.” - J. Shanahan, Arts Extract.

“It’s meticulous, never overbearing electronica. There’s space. It’s both orderly yet wild. Analog and digital tones intertwine naturally, as if they were never in conflict in the first place. From all the noticeable hard work Double Ewes put into the construction of this album, we find rewarding fruits from the labor. Relax and reap their harvest.” - P.C. Allen, Jonk Music.

"What makes this release so great is that it blends the sounds of rural America with urban electronic techniques. With its detailed and highly artistic packaging combining with such an innovative and unique sound, this could be one if not the top independent release of 2014 from Wisconsin." - B. Kenney, Mezzic

Track Name: Phosphenes
With those eyes. Not as old. Dying breath. Kitchen floor. With those eyes. Not as old. Shrapnel wrapped round that telephone pole. Round the telephone pole. And try to close your eyes. Tell me what do you see. Try to face the sun. And the phosphenes. Out in the phosphenes. Try to close your eyes. Face into the sun. Tell me what do you see. Try to clothe your eyes. Face into the sun. Tell me what do you see. Colorful phosphenes. Try to close your eyes. Tell me what do you see. Face into the sun. Colorful phosphenes.
Track Name: Deck Echoes
Rain, I really missed you. Take all that i can. In all, of my days. All that I love. And all that i have is scaffolding. Scaffolding. Ewe. Rain, I really miss you.
Track Name: A.I.
Ever since, mine. I can take it. Will you be honest with me?
You know I deserve it. Lies get the best of me. Lost all alone in the thick of it all. Yeah, two flat tires and a dead cell phone. Oh no no no. A.I.‘s not gonna save you. A.I.’s as good as paper. A.I. AI. AI. AI. No no no. Well who do you love? No no. No don’t try to run. No no no. Well, now who do you love? No no no. Don’t try to run. No no no no. Don’t try to run.
Track Name: Lonely Doe
Lonely doe, lonely doe. Lonely doe, lonely. Sometimes she wanders after something that she can not see. Misguided but not lost now. Ms. guided but not lost, no. Come into the wheat I’ve sown. I’ve been living on the corner of a five point street. And it’s been so hot the walls could weep. And you’ve been gone all summer long. And I’m just trying to fall asleep.
Track Name: Bumsteer Blues
Like a double sided blade In the hands of an ape. A golden bum steer calf in the hands of holy saints. Singing oh god. Oh god, who can I trust? Everyone wants to know. Willie, why you look so low? Can you tell me how to play? What’s it like inside your soul? Singing oh god. Oh god, who can I trust? No gonna wait till at least it snows. Where do you want to go? Wait till at least it snows. Where do you want to go? No gonna wait till at least it snows.
Track Name: Comptroller
Glad I’m not a plow. Yeah the weight of the world. Dragging you down. Man a what a drag. When you’re hitting stones and snags. Glad I’m not a plow. No. Man what a drag. Hitting stones and snags. Song about the end.
Track Name: Tears in the Sun
I can take it. Just be honest. She was my neighbor. Pocahontas. Till I saw your tears. Till I saw your tears in the sun. Sun. Sun. Sun, sun. And if you could not see that I was. Man I couldn’t seem to understand. Give everything that you have to say. Man, no well. Should of. I could of. Could of walked away. The root of, fruit of, truth of. Inviting me to stay. They invited me the stay. I can take it. Just be honest. She was my neighbor. Pocahontas. Till I saw your tears. Till I saw your tears in the sun.
Track Name: Leave the Dance (With the Girl You Brought)
Don’t be afraid. Don’t give it a second thought. Whatever you do. Leave the dance with the girl you brought. Just leave the dance with the girl you brought. It’s you. It’s you. It’s you. We won’t go into the sea. We don’t go into the sea. Earth is cool. Sun is hot. Ancient truths. Or caveats. Try not to be so complicated. Try not to be so cruel. Not to be so complicated. Try not to be so cruel. Try not to be so complicated. Try mot to be so cruel. Try not to be so complicated. Try no to be so cruel. It’s you.
Track Name: Bleeting Souls
Like the roots and the leaves of the freshman tree. Gonna have to learn to dig if you wanna get free. Don’t stand on ceremony for me.
Track Name: Auger
How long is life? A song, a tide. My mind is drifting upwards. My soul is dripping solder. I’ve set ahead. True, like the furrows I plow. I can not hold what everybody knows. How long? Is life? How long?
